The Sorcerer’s Stone

We went to see Harry Potter last night, and I was a little disappointed. It seems to me the best part of the book is the magical moment of discovery, of revelation, when Harry discovers that he’s a hero in another world about which he knows nothing. The movie missed this crucial piece of the story. Without the moment(s) of wonder, the rest of the movie seemed a little flat, matter-of-fact. The Dursleys just weren’t that bad, Hagrid wasn’t so amazingly big, Malfoy wasn’t reprehensible enough.

Not that it was bad; just that the anticipation I felt at the beginning of the movie wasn’t quite fulfilled. The act of reading allows so much more space than the audio-visual spectacle of the movie, and my expectations were very high. I just hope that kids realize that the version of Harry Potter that they have stored in their heads is every bit as legitimate, if not more legitimate, than the big screen condensed interpretation.
