Identity Problems
Apparently, the perception of me at work is that of a laid-back 70’s guy, which I find interesting, and which led me to think about why that is. I realized that I’ve created and now project this identity based on a complex set of esoteric, ironic (sub)cultural references. I guess what amazed me is that I’m the only one who gets it, at least at the office.
And now I realize that many of the references aren’t even cultural in the sense of relating to the culture at large, but rather to an obscure, private interpretation that often isn’t my own. It’s odd.
So the question is, do I attempt to redefine myself, or is the irony of the situation just too perfect? Now that I know that my co-workers think that I’m a mellow-yellow stoner type guy (the joke’s on them), I wonder how other people who I deal with here perceive me.
