It’s Sandra about the Bienale!
I find the New York Times’ art coverage ludicrously conservative, so when I come across an article like Bad News for Art , I can’t help but disbelieve the whole thing, which basically pans the Whitney Biennial. Of course, they may be right the the curator did a bad job, but it just feels like the author can’t engage with contemporary art. This would be understandable if the author weren’t an art critic, since much contemporary art in inaccessable to the average American, the same way most contemporary science is inaccessible.
There were some good points, like the fact that women are grossly under-represented, but suggesting that Elizabeth Murray should be in the show rather than Vija Celmins is just showboating by the critic. Besides, Vija is does intesting work, and I worked with her.
