What’s Your Problem, Punk?
My problem is that I like learning stuff just for the sake of knowing it a little too much. For example, I decided a while back to learn perl, and I’ve done some stuff with it on this site, but nothing really in-depth. Now, after reading A List Apart’s article on CMS with PHP, I’ve taken it upon myself to learn PHP and mySQL. So I installed mySQL on my mac (I love OS X) and am doing some simple database stuff now. What I really want to do is build a fairly sophisticated content management system so that I can just change one template and the CSS and have the changes ripple throughout my site. I would also like to take a shot at writing my own weblog software—I guess they would be more or less the same, but I want the option to be able to specify the filename of pages.
It’s all a bit of a pipe dream. I’ll probably get distracted by XML/XSL or something. Sometimes I worry that I’m losing perspective that I’m primarily a visual/ creative person (whatever that means) and that I get caught up in the technical stuff, which is really fun, but I should really be doing art. There’s always the reasoning that I’ll use it for web-based art, but is that just empty justification?
