Sonic Truth
Sonic Youth was incredible last night in Detroit(ish). What they do speaks volumes to me. They teeter on the verge of chaos, but never lose structure and control. Almost, but somehow they walk that line between music and noise in such an interesting way. The comparison to Gerhard Richter is an easy one, especially since they used his painting on Daydream Nation, but I think it’s accurate. His work also toes that line between outright noise/ confusion and beautifully controlled imagery.
The whole issue of control vs. chaos is such a poignant one for me. It’s something that I’ve dealt with my whole life, and done a lot of work about. It’s something that has really come to the forefront of my experience in the last year. I’m trying to find a point of balance between my overwhelming desire for control and the total lack of control that is reality. Maybe that’s why I’ve always liked skateboarding so much. I can toe that line between smooth control and total reckless abandon. (It just keeps coming back to that, huh?)
