I could tell right away, and so could 55-60% of people tested, which is interesting, given that most of those people would probably write off Mondrian as some sort of a freaky modern artist.
But I guess this begs the question—is there really a platonic ideal that Mondrian approaches, or are have we been conditioned to subconsciously recognize Mondrian’s aesthetic by its overwhelming influence on subsequent art and design? Modernists, of course, would argue the former, while those of us who subscribe to a more balanced point of view would espouse the latter.
