AntiSocial
I tend to be kind of a hermit. I like to hang out by myself or with just Chris, I’m bad about returning phone calls and emails, and, with a few notable exceptions, would rather just stay home. So it feels really strange that I would go out of my way to dig up someone from the past and send them an email, which is exactly what I did yesterday.
Not that I’m antisocial or misanthropic. (or am I? All these fucking people…)
I had a conversation the other day with a couple people at work about, among other things, the motivation behind writing and reading weblogs. We all agreed that it’s kind of egocentric to write one, and voyeuristic to read them. What I find interesting about it is the tension between anonymity and intimacy. I get nervous when I know that people I know are reading this thing, but I’m perfectly OK with strangers reading it. I can paint myself very differently from how people who know me perceive me. And that’s the point of tension for me—that I might reveal something to someone who knows me within a certain context, but not within another. You give up some of the ability to code shift, to change who your are in different contexts.
Reestablishing contacts with someone is problematic in the same way. The context within which the relationship existed has completely changed and there’s a tension as to what code to use.
