Curly Quotes
Even though I’m in the midst of a fairly substantial redesign, I’ve made some improvements to the use of quotation marks on this site. First, I installed the Smarty Pants plugin to convert straight quotes to curly quotes in Moveable Type. I’ve modified it to work on html entities, but haven’t uploaded the changes yet. If you’re using Mozilla or any Mozilla-based browsers, like Netscape 6 or 7, you’ll see curly quotes around properly marked-up quotations, thanks to some crafty CSS borrowed from Mark Pilgrim.
Unfortunately, Internet Explorer for Windows doesn’t automatically add quotes around the <q> element and doesn’t support the :before and :after pseudoelements. So if you’re browsing with IE Windows, you’ll see quotes in italic without quotation marks of any type. Unfortunately, IE on the Mac doesn’t support this technique either, so it displays straight quotes. Oh well…
