Maybe Glad Isn’t the Word
So maybe my post about the space shuttle the other day was a little extreme, but then again, anything having to do with Jello Biafra tends to be like that. That doesn’t change the fact that shooting “nuculer”-powered spacecraft into space isn’t an idiotic idea. As a society, are we prepared to deal with the consequences of one of these spacecraft blowing up in the atmosphere, as the Challenger did 17 years ago yesterday? I’m not comfortable with that.
I remember that day like it was yesterday. I was in seventh grade science class, third hour, maybe. We were watching a laser disc about Saturn when the other science teacher, Bill Leleszi, a short pistol of a man, came in and somberly announced, “The space shuttle has exploded.” My science teacher, whose name escapes me, a woman about the same age as Christa McAuliffe, who had applied to go up, immediately stopped the laser disc and turned on the news. Shortly thereafter, the principal announced it on the P.A.
It definitely was one of those traumatic moments that my generation shares. We’re just lucky that it didn’t happen the next time when there was supposed to be plutonium on the shuttle. And I certainly hope that no nuclear-powered rocket explodes on launch down there in Florida.

Yeah, that’s kind of weird. I’m a little freaked out myself.
