Modern Skate Park Grand Rapids
I skated the Grand Rapids park yesterday and it was amazing. The cloverleaf bowl is so much easier to ride than the one at Vans—tons of lines everywhere, the capsule is smooth as silk and you can fly around your lines. The only thing is that it’s dusty as hell—it made me cough like crazy a couple hours in and for about an hour afterward. I guess it’s a lot better than it was, so hopefully it’ll clear out by the next time I get out there.
I true Grand Rapids style, the rules ban “moral terpitude,” which I assume is directed at the fact that there are windows out into the mall where the park is located. They don’t want some freak flashing or flipping off the old people who stand out there and watch. The windows are right in front of the bowl, less than 2 feet away in the shallow end, and it’s kind of weird to have a bunch of people staring in at you as you ride—definitely a peanut gallery. You get used to it though.
The vert ramp looks gigantic, but rides nicely. It’s 13’ with 11 foot transitions and 2 feet of vert, but those big transitions make a huge difference and it doesn’t feel that big. The only weird thing is that it’s got a little box cut out in the middle of one side with coping at the very top of the transition. It’s scary as shit to suddenly realize that it’s there as you’re coming back down the wall on the other side.
All in all, this is a great park solely for the concrete. That thing rides like a dream and it’s only two hours away…

Living right down the street from modern is great. I go there a lot and what you say about it is very good. The dustiness isnt a problem that much anymore. though. But other than the dusty thing. You pretty much got it covered. Although i didnt see you say anything about the “street” section. Maybe you should put that in there. :)

That park is the hottest place{only place}in grand rapids to skate. I also saw josh kalis at modern and he signed my shoe It’s Tight!!!!!
