Pittsburgh Akron

So Pittsburgh is a pretty cool city with what appears to be a thriving downtown and art scene. CMK and I went over the weekend. We stayed at the Priory, which was only blocks from the Andy Warhol Museum and the Mattress Factory.

The Warhol Museum has a Friday evening reduced rate deal, and it happened to coincide with some sort of high school event. Tons of misfit-type teens with dj’s and break and swing dancing. It was a little disconcerting to be in a museum while loud music was blaring. Museums are usually hushed, serious places… The coolest piece was Silver Clouds, a bunch of silver plastic balloon pillows floating around in a room with fans. You could push them around and watch them bounce off one another, reflecting everything around them.

The Mattress Factory had a James Turrell show up, which was quite incredible—all the work was done with light, primarily light in ambiguous spaces that played with your perception.

After less than 24 hours in Pittsburgh, which were actually relaxed and enjoyable, we headed to lovely Akron, primarily to skate the parks that Tim rides. The bowl at the Akron park is quite possibly the worst bit of concrete I have ever ridden. It’s rough, it’s got big bumps, the transitions round over right before the coping, there are no decent carving lines—you just get one carve and then you’re out the end. That’s the problem with poorly constructed snakeruns.

The Cuyahoga Falls park, on the other hand, was quite fun. Even though it’s only about 3 feet deep and all around small, what they built was built right, more or less. The coping could be set a little better, but compared to the rounded over coping at Akron, it was great. There were a couple of good speed lines through a very short snakerun setup. The only complaint is that they needed more transitiond areas. A fast line out of the snake run to the pyramid was fun, but then you ran out of trannies, so the line was over. Oh well. Fun, but not somewhere I would go out of my way to ride.
