Like a Devil Rock

At the annual Cub Scout banquet at the VFW Hall, there was a raffle. I always got a buck from my parents to enter. The odds were good: every scout brought an item to raffle off. One year, I won a Bob Seger and the Silver Bullet Band record.

Who?

Moreover, what was I going to do with a record? I knew very well that there was no way that I would be allowed to listen to it at home. It was Rock and Roll and therefore, clearly (d)evil rock.

I nodded and smiled when my friends told me that it was awesome and that it rocked and that they all loved it.

“I know,” I said. “I can’t wait to hear it,” knowing full well that its vinyl would never be touched by needle, at least not in my house.

When we got home, that record disappeared. It didn’t take me too long to find it—up on a shelf in the basement closet with my dad’s old Beatles records. I’m surprised they kept it.

At least my parents didn’t force me to decline my prize in front of my friends and their families.

And who knows, maybe they saved me from a lifetime of bad taste in music…
