It’s so sad when a new site that I designed goes live and there are countless problems with it. Such is the case with the Human Factors and Ergonomics Society website.
While I’m not in love with the design, it’s clean and clear. Unfortunately, a few details got slightly screwed up in the final site, which makes it look a little junky. For example, on the homepage, the Adjust Text Size box is shifted over and breaks the right column.
The layout issues are piddly compared to the sad state of the code. My nice, clean, valid xhtml templates have been reduced to a nested table tag soup mess. They don’t even come close to validating. A large part of the problem is the pre-packaged content management system that the other vendor used to implement the site. It produces garbage code out of the box—believe it or not, the code now looks good compared to how it looked before, a direct result of my intervention after seeing the initial version. Of course, most of the validation errors would be fixed if they just switched to an html 4 Transitional doctype…
Another thing that drives me nuts about these asp/.Net systems is that the root directory is never good enough—they always redirect the some other directory like “Web.” What’s wrong with the web root?
Oh well, at least that project’s finally done (after a year and a half!?), and doesn’t look too bad…
